The restaurant was in a basement; it was damp and dark, and reeked with the stifling fumes of vodka, tobacco-smoke, tar, and some acrid odor. Facing Gavrila at another table sat a drunken man in the dress of a sailor, with a red beard, all over coal-dust and tar. Hiccuping every minute, he was dron ing a song all made up of broken and incoherent words, strangely sibilant and guttural sounds. He was unmistak ably not a Russian. Behind him sat two Moldavian women, tattered, black haired, sunburned creatures, who were chanting some sort of song, too, with drunken voices.
The red headed sailor was asleep, with his elbows on the table. ” said Chelkash, getting up. Gavrila tried' to get up, but could not, and with a vigor ous oath, he laughed a meaningless, drunken laugh. ” said Chelkash, sitting down again op posite him. Gavrila still guffawed, staring with dull eyes at his new employer. And the latter gazed at him intently, vigilantly and thoughtfully. He saw before him a man whose life had fallen into his wolfish clutches. He, Chelkash, felt that he had the power to do with it as he pleased.
The wind whistled as it drove through a hole in the broken bottom, where a loose splinter was vibrating with a disquieting, mournful sound. The waves splashed against the shore, and their roar was monotonous and hopeless, as though they were relating something intolerably tedious and depressing, something of which they had grown utterly weary and which they were trying to escape, but about which they must nevertheless keep on talking. The noise of the rain blended with the splashing of the waves, and above the tufned-over boat there floated the long-drawn-out, heavy sigh of the earth, wearied and outraged by the eternal suc cession of warm bright summer and cold, damp, misty autumn.
