The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), for example, is the oldest federal laboratory; it was founded in 1901 as the National Bureau of Standards, with the goal of defining weights, measures, and other numerical descriptions of physical quantities so that everyone could use the same definitions. Another example is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which conducts field research to monitor the quality of air, water, and ecosystems to support regulatory activity. The EPA also funds academic and industrial research.
