My father was the one most like the earth. He had to be born and raised with wheat and corn. My father was dark, and he slept on his horse like the slow rider of the spring. My uncles were like the birds around the place. They belonged to the trees and the unplowed fields. Some were as powerful as draft horses. Others had faces of stone or roasted wheat.
