As Sumner predicted, they also led to a postwar job (–) as the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford—a job I undertook despite having never taught American political history before. My friends sought to make my departure from Balliol memorable. Litt. thesis, I was invited to dine at High Table on my last night in college. A number of friends helped me pack. When I told him my news, he took me as therapy to an Indian restaurant with the hottest food in town. Life had to go on. I proceeded to the other job I had planned for vacation. I spent some weeks in London at the merchant banking firm of Guinness, Mahan. I spent a week in each of four departments where I learned some odd things; for example, there was only a few pence of ale in the price of a Guinness bottle, the rest being advertisement, bottling, and so on.

I continued playing sports, but our rugger team was not up to the previous year’s standard. Craig and I continued to write songs. But he, too, had settled down to focus on his thesis. Sometime in —I have no record of when—the Rhodes scholars of my generation received something of a shock. Ambassador Joseph Kennedy was invited to speak at Rhodes House. We all turned up. I recall that he came, as was proper, in a rather grand car, which the chauffeur kept running at his parking place outside Rhodes House.
