Sometimes instead of giving a lecture the leader might take an altogether different approach by initiating an activityfor instance, having students draw on paper a time when their chemically dependent Page 19 parents embarrassed other family members at the dinner table, or what it felt like to sit in their bedrooms listening to their parents fight. After the lecture or other activity, members are asked to relate this new information to their own lives and to share this insight with the group. This is awareness and support in actiongaining personal insight through the new information presented, listening to other group members share, and taking the risk to share one's own thoughts and feelings.
Or students might respond that they aren't angry when, in fact, they have their arms folded tightly across their chests or are scowling. Confrontation isn't accusation; it means pointing out the facts. As in any intimate gathering of people, there can be conflict. One student might accuse another of always monopolizing the discussion; another might complain that some people in the group aren't being honest. This is to be expected. * Some issues aren't appropriate for a support group. If a student reveals that she has been physically or sexually abused, for example, a support group wouldn't be the place to work on this issue; the student should be referred to a therapist.
