Also at low sample size a significant part of some components may be quasi-irreversibly adsorbed on the packing material. 4 Detector Selectivity Most detectors have response factors which vary widely from one component to another. The selectivity characterizes this variation in response with the chemical nature of the compounds studied.

For example the detector cell volume should be less than 1 Ill. This is difficult to achieve with a UV detector without some reduction in the optical path length, hence an increase in the detection limits which is opposite to the rationale in using microbore columns. The specifications can be relaxed somewhat by chosing columns longer than the conventional ones and operating then at a higher flow velocity to a comparable analysis time.
