Africans in general seem not to have a great sense of space. They crowd up against you and do not shy away from pushing you. An African’s home is far from being his castle – it is open to callers all day and all night. These children wanted cigarettes above all and my irritation at not having had one myself since midnight finally surfaced. I slammed the door and drove off in a cloud of dust, with a diminishing view of a couple of youngsters dancing rhythmically in the wing mirror. Immediately I felt guilty.
We had already been subjected to months of injections under the terrifying auspices of Nurse Ilse at the local private hospital. Nurse Ilse is a big girl, but essentially friendly, and she administers her yellow fever/rabies/tetanus/diphtheria/hepatitis/polio/meningitis injections with as much sympathy as she can muster. ’ she takes a small step backwards, licks her lips, then lunges with gusto for whichever is the lucky part of the anatomy, whispers ‘sorry’ as if she almost means it, then drives the needle home.
Never mind Dark Stars, hunger, politics and Broken Hearts. Here comes a journey of joy and laughter in eight African countries – admittedly with a little sombreness and even a smidgeon of anger thrown in from time to time. The real beginning I hate the sea. Always have. I know it is not a support-winning stance but, for me, the sea is right up there with tank-tops and cucumbers in the list of things I just don’t like. My dislike of it is not rational. Most dislikes aren’t. I don’t mind being on it and I am very happy to look at pictures of it, but I don’t like being beside it.
